WHAT IS 'PSST, HEY SWEETHEART'
At Psst, hé schatje, you experience sexual street harassment. The installation is set up in a public space. Visitors walk an individual route through specially designed corridors and rooms, where actors are present. Through reenacted situations, audio, information about the subject, and more, visitors experience what it is like. Safety is ensured by the Psst, hé schatje team during, around, and after the route. Afterward, visitors can settle into the adjoining living room and are invited to engage in conversation with each other and the experts present. Everyone is also made aware of bystander intervention; in this way, 'Psst, hé schatje' directly contributes to awareness, dialogue, and potential change.

Tijdens de route klinkt “Als je meeloopt”, een nummer dat veel bezoekers is bijgebleven en waar vaak naar wordt gevraagd. Het lied beschrijft situaties van seksuele straatintimidatie en maakt een statement: wat er gebeurt op straat, blijft hangen. In het hoofd en het leven van het slachtoffer. Het nummer vraagt aandacht voor de blijvende impact van deze ervaringen die vaak worden gebagatelliseerd of genegeerd. Bij deze overal te beluisteren!

THE 5D METHOD - bystander intervention
DIRECT
Focus your attention on the perpetrator and confront them about the violent or intimidating behavior. You can then intervene immediately, but ensure that both you and the victim are safe and prevent the situation from escalating.
DELEGATE
Delegating involves bringing in a third party who can help change the situation. This could be a train conductor, a bouncer, a police officer, a supervisor, or another bystander.
DISTRACT
Distraction is a subtle way to intervene in cases of violence or intimidation. Ask what time it is, or pretend you know the potential victim. By doing so, you break the situation and can stop or prevent the unwanted behavior.
DELAY
Stay put if intervention is not possible because things are moving too fast or the situation is too confusing. Reassure the victim and confirm that the other person's behavior was inappropriate. It is very valuable if the victim can tell her story immediately.
DOCUMENT
Document the situation. Observe and make recordings or notes so that you can hand them over to the victim afterwards. She can use the information to file a report or a formal complaint, if she chooses to do so.

"It was 5:00 PM, it was starting to get dark, and I was cycling home. At a traffic light, I was boxed in by four boys. They kept getting closer and said they were going home with me. I politely asked if they would leave me alone. Only after a hundred meters and many requests did they cycle away laughing. The few people who saw it happen did nothing."

URGENCY AND GOAL
Two out of three women aged 12 to 25 said they had been harassed on the street at least once in 2020-2021. A large proportion of young women and people from the LGBTI+ community felt unsafe or afraid. Victims often keep their experiences and emotions to themselves, even though the impact can be devastating. - CBS

LOUS VAN NOORDWIJK
CONCEPT, ARTISTIC DIRECTION.
Maker, interdisciplinary performer, speaker, and sound designer/composer Lous van Noordwijk graduated in 2022 from the Music Theatre program at ArtEZ University of the Arts. Alongside her work for 'Psst, hé schatje', she is developing her performing artistry within the De Werf talent development program at the Theaterschip in Deventer.
She has also worked as a performer and maker with Theatergroep de Horde, Ischa den Blanken, Theater Gajes, Stormkamer, Werkplaats van deWoestijne, and RAAF Muziektheater, and performed at various festivals with her own collective Nachtlicht.
As an expert by experience, she felt the urgency to make a major impact. With 'Psst, hey sweetie', she transforms her feelings of powerlessness, fear, anger, and confusion into the prevention of this societal problem.

TO ARISE
In the winter of 2021, Lous was frequently confronted with street harassment, more than usual. After many experiences, her fear had turned into irritation, helplessness, and confusion. Why does this still happen so often in this "modern age"?
During her studies (ArtEZ University of the Arts, Music Theatre), she was given ample freedom to create her own work. This is where the idea for 'Psst, hey sweetie!' originated. After a test in a classroom, the concept of letting people experience street harassment within the safe walls of the theatre proved to be a good idea. After all, the first visitors engaged in a lively discussion about this unspoken subject following the 'Psst, hey sweetie' installation route. The Municipality of Arnhem was aware of the positive impact and wanted to book the installation route at various vocational colleges and secondary schools just two weeks after the test.
During that period, Lous had little input and used only her own perspective as a source. After graduating, she would investigate this further in collaboration with experts in the field of sexual harassment in public spaces.
As a result, 'Psst, hé schatje' now exists in all its glory, and Lous has been able to realize the installation in collaboration with Theater Ins Blau and experts Emancipator and Fairspace. Everyone is welcome to experience this unique approach, in which visitors are confronted with the reality of sexual street harassment, and to subsequently engage in conversation to learn how they can contribute to a safer society for us all.
